Date palms have been known since the Mesopotamian era. In the archaeological site of Masada Fortress in Israel, date pits dating back 2000 years have even been unearthed. Researchers managed to germinate one of these date pits a few years ago. Date palms thrive in very hot desert regions and after 5-6 years produce precious and particularly nutritious fruit - dates.

Date powerhouse

Dates are a very healthy source of energy in the desert. With their high carbohydrate content of between 60 and 70%, dried dates have a very long shelf life and are therefore ideal for stockpiling. Desert peoples have been utilising this property for hundreds of years and often had to live on just one date a day. The fruit of the date palm is particularly nutritious thanks to its high fibre content.

Is there a difference to the twig dates of the same variety?

The twig dates and the pitted dates of the "Deglet Nour" variety offered here are the same dates. However, we have already removed the dates from the branch and pitted them for you. The advantage for you is that you can use them directly for your recipes or as a quick snack between meals. The name Zweigdattel does not mean a separate variety in this context, the name simply refers to the location of the dates on the panicle.

How did the name "Finger of Light" come about for this variety?

The Deglet Nour date means "Finger of Light" in Arabic. It is probably called this because its amber-coloured and tender flesh reveals the date pit inside the fruit in sunlight.

What makes dates so nutritious?

Dates not only have special flavour qualities, they are also very nutritious. Even today, Bedouin people always have a supply of dried dates with them. Dates are rich in nutrients and fibre and also contain more potassium than bananas. They even surpass wholemeal bread in terms of fibre content. With their high fructose content, dates are a quick source of energy and are ideal for athletes for a quick, natural energy supply as well as a quick power snack in everyday life.

Are the dates additionally treated?

No. Our dates of the "Deglet Nour" variety are grown without the addition of chemicals such as artificial fertilisers and without the use of pesticides. The cultivation meets the criteria of organic farming and, of course, our high standards for all foods. No other substances are added during processing. This gives you 100% nature and 100% flavour without additives.

Should I remove the skin from the date?

You do not need to remove the skin of the Deglet Nour. There are certainly some varieties and qualities with a firm and tough skin - but these Deglet Nour dates are pleasantly soft and there are no problems when preparing them in a blender or for confectionery.
