Whether coconut, almond, pea, cashew, oat or spelt - there is a large selection of plant-based milk and cream substitutes. Generally, pulses, nuts or cereals are used as a base. Their different properties ensure variety in vegan cuisine. For example, nut milk is particularly creamy, cereal milk is rather sweet and an alternative made from pulses provides valuable proteins.

But which vegan alternative goes with which dish? First of all, cow's milk or cream can be replaced with a plant-based alternative in almost all recipes. Your own taste preferences are the main factor in making the right choice. For some dishes, the consistency of the vegan milk or cream is also important. Oat and almond milk, for example, are real all-rounders and can also be produced in raw food quality. They are suitable for baking and cooking. Soya milk is suitable for savoury cuisine, while rice milk is more suitable for desserts and sweet dishes. When choosing a suitable cream alternative, a distinction must be made - as with the animal variant - as to whether it is to be used for cooking or whipping.
Making vegan milk and cream alternatives yourself
Instead of buying plant-based substitute products in the supermarket, you can make them at home without much effort and with just a few ingredients. This is not only cheaper, but also healthier and fresher than the industrially produced version. This is because the milk substitutes bought in supermarkets are highly heated and therefore contain fewer valuable nutrients. In addition, many packages contain harmful substances (such as adhesives or the chemical substance bisphenol A) that may end up in our food. The extent to which this happens depends, among other things, on the storage period and storage temperature. If you make your own plant-based milk, you also save yourself the hassle of lugging around tetra packs or bottles and produce less waste. A suitable high-performance blender is essential for preparation. Our favourite for perfect consistencies is the Personal Blender PB250, which chops and grinds even hard ingredients such as grains and nuts in a matter of seconds thanks to its high performance.
Variation of plant-based cream substitute:
To make cream, simply reduce the amount of water (depending on the desired consistency). We recommend 100-150 ml of water with 1 tablespoon of almond puree.
