Green energy supply: an important building block for a sustainable lifestyle?
Raw food and a healthy diet make an important contribution to a more sustainable life. In addition to supplying the body with energy, heating also plays a significant role in our well-being. Without a reasonable temperature, it becomes uncomfortable in autumn and winter. This is precisely where climate-friendly energy pays off. Find out more about why sustainable electricity and environmentally friendly heating are worthwhile in the long term.
Why the choice of electricity provider is important
The German electricity market has been becoming increasingly green in recent years. To give an example: In 2023, renewable energies accounted for 60% of the electricity mix. An even higher percentage is expected in 2024. The most common forms of energy are hydrogen, wind power, solar energy and biogas. However, the new technologies do not only have friends. Critics who are not convinced of their efficiency like to object: The electricity comes out of the socket anyway, whether clean or dirty. The private consumer has little say in this picture. However, it's not that simple. The only thing that can come out of the socket is the mix that is currently available. Figuratively speaking, the electricity in your own household is therefore never 100% green, as it is technically impossible to separate clean and environmentally harmful electricity. Financially, however, the purchase of sustainable energy supports its expansion, so that the quota increases continuously. Private customers therefore have a certain amount of room for manoeuvre when choosing their electricity provider. And what about heating?
Heating with a heat pump
Electricity is not the only essential topic in terms of sustainability. We also support the transformation process with the help of climate-friendly energy. We "heat" our bodies with food. The situation is different for homes. Natural gas is still the heating fuel of choice in most households, followed by oil. Both are poorly tolerated from a climatic point of view. As a result, heating with heat pumps has increased significantly in recent years. Installation in the home is sometimes subsidised by the state. And what about the price of electricity for heat pumps? It fluctuates around 25 cents per kilowatt hour. As the heat pump only requires electricity and no gas or oil, the last two cost items are eliminated. Environmentalists also praise the efficiency of the heating system, which can save costs. Consumers should ideally seek a direct consultation. This is the only way to find out how much money can be saved compared to another heating method. This always depends on the conditions in the house. Among other things, it depends on the level of insulation in the building, which can still be improved in many households.
A holistic approach to sustainability
Our lifestyle offers many opportunities for greater sustainability. The phenomenon should be viewed holistically. It starts with choosing a healthy and environmentally friendly diet based on natural foods, smoothies and the like. We also exert our influence through other purchasing decisions. The energy and heating sector in particular offers huge potential for positive change. Customers therefore have the power to make a valuable contribution.
