Beautiful skin, hair and nails through nutrition - naturally boosting from within by Nicoletta Poddey (@eatcareheal)
A healthy liver and a nutrient-rich diet, rich in antioxidants, silicon and omega-3 fatty acids, are crucial for beautiful skin, strong hair and strong nails.
You may have heard this phrase before: "True beauty comes from within"... There is so much truth in this. Because whether it's beautiful skin, strong hair or strong nails, anything you apply externally is usually just a crutch on the way to your goal.
Why is that?
The linchpin for beautiful skin, hair and nails is a healthy liver. It is the powerhouse of our body. If it is healthy and fully functional, it cleanses the blood, neutralises harmful substances and stores valuable vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Unfortunately, however, more and more people's livers have become sluggish and overloaded without them really noticing. Reasons for this include a diet too high in protein and fat, too much stress and possibly viral infections. If the liver is overloaded, fats and proteins can no longer be broken down and utilised properly. Problems with digestion are then often the result. The poorly digested fats and proteins accumulate in the intestine and ultimately the nutrients can no longer be sufficiently absorbed by the intestine. In the medium to long term, this can lead to nutrient deficiencies.
In addition, a sluggish and overloaded liver can no longer filter the blood well, which reduces the oxygen content in the blood and reduces the supply to the dermis (dermis). Less oxygen in this layer of the skin, which consists mainly of connective tissue, means that toxins cannot be properly cleansed from the skin. As a result, the skin stores toxins, which can lead to inflammation, cracks and other skin problems. Too little oxygen also causes the skin to age more quickly. Stress is also a killer for beautiful skin. This is because it causes our adrenal glands to release stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol.
So what contributes to beautiful skin?
It is not the often advertised collagen that is important for a radiant complexion. Antioxidants, silicon (silicic acid) and omega-3 fatty acidsplay a much more important role. and sufficient hydration play the most important role. Antioxidants protect the cells from oxidative stress, so-called free radicals, which cause the skin to age more quickly. Silicon supports the body in the formation of the body's own collagen and elastin and gives the connective tissue more stability. This makes our skin firmer. Omega-3 fatty acids are unsaturated fatty acids and, as a component of cell membranes, are important for supple skin.
The largest amount of valuable antioxidants is found in fresh fruit. Incidentally, fresh fruit also cleanses the liver. And as we established at the beginning, good liver function has a decisive influence on beautiful skin, strong hair and healthy nails. Wild blueberries are full of antioxidants and, of all foods, provide one of the most important supports for your liver.
As far as silicon is concerned, most people are still unaware that there are two different types of silica: one type is a tremendous support for the bones, the other is particularly helpful for the skin. This second type of silicic acid is found in vegetables. Especially in asparagus, artichokes and kale stems, cucumbers, but also in wild herbs such as horsetail, nettle and oat straw.
Valuable omega-3 fatty acids are found, among other things, in algaepumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, hemp seeds and in walnutsas well as in red leaf salads.
Figs, avocados and bananas are rich in potassium, another important element for the skin.
As a booster for beautiful skin, you should also drink enough - ideally at least 2 litres a day. We recommend fresh spring water or even filtered water with a little lemon. Freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices or cold herbal teas are also helpful here. Caution: warm drinks tend to cause dehydration.
Strong hair and nails:
Do your nails have white patches, ridges or are you missing the so-called half moons? Then, in addition to a sluggish liver, this could also be due to a long-standing zinc deficiency may be behind this. This can be caused by a hidden viral load, an unbalanced diet and frequent adrenaline rushes. The situation is similar if your hair becomes brittle, dull or even thinner. Valuable trace elements, vitamins and antioxidants that nourish the hair and nails are no longer provided in sufficient quantities and stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol can also cause hair loss because they attack the hair root and impair a hormone that is important for hair growth.
As with the skin, in addition to zinc, silicon is a valuable nutrient for beautiful hair and strong nails. silicon is also a valuable nutrient. You will find the relevant foods mentioned above.
If you would also like to stimulate your hair growth, a tea infusion of rosemary, massaged into the scalp as a hair tonic, could be helpful. It also soothes itchy scalp and dandruff.
The amla berry is said to nourish the hair roots and improve hair growth, shine and colour. Another helper for strong hair is ashwagandha. This Indian plant not only cleanses the liver and supports the adrenal glands in times of stress, but can also counteract hair loss and improve hair health. Barley grass juice powder, spirulinamilk thistle, lemon balmnettle leaves, horsetail and pumpkin seeds are further suppliers of nutrients that are important for the growth of strong hair and nails.
In individual cases it is also useful to take the trace element zinc in the form of liquid zinc sulphate (e.g. from the brand Vimergy) to replenish the stores. It is best to talk to your doctor or therapist about this.
