Date palms have been known since the Mesopotamian era. In the archaeological site of Masada Fortress in Israel, date pits dating back 2000 years have even been unearthed. Researchers managed to germinate one of these date pits a few years ago. Date palms thrive in very hot desert regions and after 5-6 years produce precious and particularly nutritious fruit - dates.
Date powerhouse
Dates are a very healthy source of energy from the desert. With their high carbohydrate content of between 60 and 70 %, dried dates have a very long shelf life and are therefore ideal for stockpiling. Desert peoples have been utilising this property for hundreds of years and often had to live on just one date a day. The fruits of the date palm are particularly nutritious: they contain more fibre than wholemeal bread, more potassium than bananas and gently aid digestion.
