It's no wonder that sweet dried fruits such as dates, mountain figs and pineapples are so popular in the Keimling Naturkost shop. This is because they are able to soak up more sun in their home countries than would ever be possible here. Their delicious flavour and valuable vitamins are good for the palate and body - but can we consume them in this country with a clear conscience?
Sometimes it just has to be exotic
Our native flora has a lot to offer connoisseurs. That's why it's very sensible to eat a predominantly regional diet. Nevertheless, we are also tempted by exotic fruit from time to time - and this is also possible with a clear conscience. Namely when the fruit is grown in a resource-friendly way and under fair conditions and reaches us by the shortest route. From the very beginning Keimling Naturkost has applied the strictest sustainability standards when selecting food and suppliers from abroad. Standards that we scrupulously review time and again.
Grown responsibly on site
The exotic fruits in the Keimling Naturkost Shop come from controlled organic cultivation, sometimes also from certified wild collections. They are often grown in extensive mixed cultures. These are less susceptible to pest infestation and do not leach out the soil. This means that pesticides and artificial fertilisers can be completely dispensed with. The farms, which are mostly run by families or cooperatives, are paid fairly and punctually for their harvest. Our dried fruit comes from all over the world, from Turkey to Tanzania.
Dried according to strict raw food standards
In order to preserve the harvested fruit, it is gently dried on site at temperatures below 45°C and, if necessary, processed immediately. This provides the producers with an additional source of income. Sometimes energy-efficient drying ovens are used for drying, sometimes drying in the sun is possible - and sometimes the fruit dries on the tree before it is harvested. Many of our foods, such as the juicy Deglet Nour Supreme dates or our bestseller Pineapple Pieces First Class, have the really-raw certification for fully controlled raw food quality. Artificial ripening, steam or heat treatment or even sulphurisation are not used for Keimling natural food! Another advantage of drying on site: No superfluous water is dragged along during transport to Germany, which unnecessarily consumes additional energy.
Our own Keimling packing centre in Buxtehude
Most exotic dried fruit comes to us in large containers and air-conditioned containers by ship to Germany. They are often stored temporarily in special warehouses in the port of Hamburg until they make the short journey to the Keimling centre in Buxtehude. There, we pack the food by hand in our own packing centre, which we operate with the support of local social workshops. Here, too, compliance with the raw food chain is guaranteed. So that you can fulfil your desire for exotic fruit enjoyment at any time with a clear conscience. Mjam!
